About This Content Set
Some Assembly Required is structured as a single sandbox robot-building game containing 28 distinct in-app levels, split into two clear types: 12 short "RoboRepair" levels, each isolating one specific robot-building mechanic as a quick, focused puzzle, and 16 longer, fully-themed "story" campaign levels that combine multiple mechanics into a real-world-flavoured challenge (package delivery, restaurant service, a zombie rescue, a dance routine, and more). A general sandbox/free-build mode is also referenced in the source material, alongside the fixed campaign levels.
What This Content Aims to Achieve
Some Assembly Required is squarely a middle-school (grades 6–8) engineering-design-practice tool rather than a subject-content one, and it teaches the same underlying design process repeatedly through varied, entertaining scenarios rather than teaching distinct science content per level.
RoboRepair levels (12) — one mechanic each, used as short skill-building drills
Each RoboRepair level isolates a single specific robot-building skill — adjusting centre of mass, motor RPM, wheel assembly, motor controls/direction, resizing pistons and motors, servo motor limits, transmitter channel mapping, and three different joint types (sliding, rotational, surface). These read as scaffolding/practice levels, intended to be mastered before or alongside the larger story campaigns.
| Level | Objective |
| 02 – RoboRepair: Center of Mass | Balance the robot's parts so its mass is centred and it stops falling over, by detaching and re-attaching the problem part. |
| 03 – RoboRepair: RPM | Increase wheel RPM via the Parts Properties menu so the robot outruns the conveyor belt it's standing on. |
| 05 – RoboRepair: Wheel Assembly | Build a wheel assembly (rod + wheel + motor) so a tractor can clear the field. |
| 06 – RoboRepair: Motor Controls | Apply input mapping to the left wheel set so a robot that can only drive in circles gains full manoeuvrability. |
| 07 – RoboRepair: Resize Piston | Use the Resize tool to extend a piston's reach so it can hit a keyboard key. |
| 08 – RoboRepair: Servo Motors | Expand a servo motor's clockwise rotation limit so a robotic finger can reach a piano key. |
| 10 – RoboRepair: Flip Motor Direction | Flip one side's motor rotation to counter-clockwise so a robot stops driving in circles and goes straight. |
| 11 – RoboRepair: Motor Size & Torque | Resize motors to increase torque so the robot can lift heavy weights. |
| 12 – RoboRepair: Transmitters | Reassign left/right-hand transmitter channels to correctly control a nested robot's actuators. |
| 16 – RoboRepair: Sliding Joints | Change fixed joints to sliding joints on a claw machine so the claw can move. |
| 17 – RoboRepair: Rotational Joints | Change a joint to rotational so a robot's gear assembly can turn a key in a locked chest. |
| 18 – RoboRepair: Surface Joints | Remove fixed surface joints on a machine so a bowling ball can roll down the ramp and hit the pins. |
Story campaign levels (16) — combined mechanics in themed real-world scenarios
These longer levels combine multiple build skills into a themed task with sub-objectives and hidden bonus secrets, covering domains from food service and logistics to performance, gardening, and light-hearted disaster scenarios (a zombie invasion, a Kaiju movie shoot).
| Level | Objective |
| 01 – Same Day Delivery | Deliver a package from a van to a house's front door with a robot low enough to catch and place it. |
| 04 – Kaiju Catastrophe | Build a robot capable of flattening a movie-set city for a director's Kaiju disaster scene — open-ended and creative. |
| 09 – Sandwich Server | Catch a sandwich from a ceiling dispenser, carry it across a restaurant, and place it upright on a table without touching the table. |
| 13 – Roaring Refuse | Pick up a companion cube using effectors/hinges/pistons and place it in an incinerator at the back of the level. |
| 14 – Pinata's Peril | Reach and break a piñata at its highest point without touching a blindfolded human bystander. |
| 15 – Tippy Toe Tidy Up | Clean up dust from a bedroom — including under the bed and up high — without moving furniture or waking a sleeping human. |
| 19 – Wood and Chips | Remove branches, cut down trees, catch the logs, and load them onto a truck. |
| 20 – Robo Coffee | Make and deliver a cup of coffee (with cream) to a construction worker upstairs, avoiding caution tape en route. |
| 21 – The Berry on Top | Catch and place berries onto at least 2 of 3 cakes moving on an assembly line. |
| 22 – Freights in High Places | Lift and relocate a shelf of pallets across an obstacle-filled warehouse without dropping any boxes, and load an extra pallet first. |
| 23 – "Soda Me!" | Catch a dispensed soda and deliver it — without damage, without touching the floor, and without leaving the kitchen — to a human watching TV. |
| 24 – Chrome Thumb | Till soil, plant seeds, and water two garden plots using a multi-tool robot. |
| 25 – Silicon Sonata | Play a duet on a cello (grab, position, and bow it) alongside a violin-playing robot for a romantic dinner scene. |
| 26 – Across the Goo | Cross a gap and turn off leaking chemical valves in a factory without touching the goo. |
| 27 – Byte of the Living Dead | Rescue humans from a zombie-besieged furniture store — detain zombies, break barriers, and transport all humans out at once. |
| 28 – Dance, Dance Robot Revolution | Build a robot that can hit at least 70% of floor and wall targets during a fast-paced dance routine. |
